香港理工大學－Secondary School Mathematics & Science Competition

It has been memorable to participate in the Mathematics and Science Competition organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It was just like attending the public examination –completing a set of questions in a packed school hall. There is also a strong academic atmosphere since everyone is revising for the test. The seriousness of every contestant and the difficulty of the test simulate our interest to study for the HKDSE. The difficulty of the test does not come from its complexity, but from the short exam time limit and the wide range of question types and knowledge covered--some of them are not taught in my school yet! I am glad to be awarded in the competition, but most importantly, the prize is an acknowledgment of my efforts in my studies. Besides, it encourages me to keep up the hard work.

It has been a memorable experience participating in the Hong Kong Mathematics Olympiad. The ruler-and-compass construction part is especially intriguing. Presumably similar to most of the candidates, I have never entered the world of geometric construction. Due to our lack of knowledge, we were given some self-learning materials. It has been a very special moment to explore the ancient mathematics. Following the steps of construction and realizing that any relevant tasks can be done with simple tools without scales, I am delighted to discover the mystery of geometry. I have not thought of getting any prize in this session, but the surprising result has motivated my exploration of the unknown world of knowledge.

I used to dislike working with others. I used to regurgitate. The fame of learning Maths used to go out. In the midst of participation, things get a U-turn. When I cooperated with my teammates to complete the drawing of a graph, I wore a smile unintentionally. I have never been so delighted in the discussion of Maths. Maybe the interest of Maths begins to ignite in my mind. What's more, when we used four squares to construct a circle, I abruptly realized that the theories taught by my teachers can be applied. Only application can really bring us to the way of success in learning maths. Finally, I have to give an applause to my friends and teammates. Without them, the taste of triumph is just an imagination.

First of all, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the host for their recognition and encouragement to me. I might have done well but this achievement couldn't be received without my wonderful teammates. I couldn’t have won this by myself. We did encounter unforeseen hurdles along the way. There are types of questions that we have never seen or encountered before, but we spared no pains and overcame them. The award comes and goes but this precious experience will last forever.
